Performance Modeling technology can Enhance Yamaha Vocaloid!

8th Example: Right Intoning and Wrong Timbre
June, 25, 2004.

New example is called "Flying Girl". We now tried to achieve more correct vocal intoning, when all Pitch Bend gliding and melismas are well-coordinated to "Vibrato Objects" and long note breathing. Unfortunately soul character of timbre is not achieved and "nasal singing" and weird high frequency after-sound are evident in the main tune.

For main tune and chorus PMStyles have calculated:

  • Velocity changes
  • Auto phrasing, legato and pauses
  • Harmonics curve
  • Pitch Bend gliding and melismas
  • Parameters of "Vibrato Objects"
  • Noise curve
  • Resonance 03 Band Width and Amplitude curves
  • Resonance 04 Band Width and Amplitude curves

No manual editing at all!

To analyze the result yourself you can take the following files in mp3 and *.mid format:

Flying_Girl_(voice_and_background).mp3 [2,30MB]

Main_Tune_Verses_1&2_(voice_only).mp3 [749KB]
Main_Tune_Verses_3_(voice_only).mp3 [398KB]

Main_Tune_Verses_1&2_-_Yamaha_Vocaloid_(LEON)_data_file.mid [217KB]
Main_Tune_Verses_3_-_Yamaha_Vocaloid_(LEON)_data_file.mid [110KB]

ALL (2) Vocaloid MIDI files in ZIP

Note: Main Tune and Chorus were rendered using the following Vocaloid settings:

Comments by Alexei Ustinov, CTO Jasmine Music Technology

Creating this example required some significant efforts in coordinating the work of special PMStyle, capable of making perfect transformation of a MIDI track with the flute timbre, with Vocaloid Synthesis. The principal problem here is that unlike regular Synthesizer in Vocaloid one note/syllable is not always a periodic signal with definite pitch that can be moved using Pitch Bend. So you have to take into account the distribution of time in note/syllable between consonants and vowels: At last, all Pitch Bend gliding and melismas were well-coordinated with "Vibrato Objects" and long note breathing, but the timbre shade had weird "nasal" character with some sharp high after-sound which was hard to change even after enough rummaging through Vocaloid settings, also some melismas have clear and obvious "chipmunk sounding": Sometimes LEON's singing simply irritated me, and it was really hard to resist the temptation to sing this song myself. Naturally, my technique is not good enough to perform all melismas that we made LEON to perform, but, undoubtedly, my performance would have had much more "sense and feeling": In general, all this encouraged me to accept the idea already expressed by some users: vocal synthesis technologies will most likely lead to the advent of "New vocal aesthetics" than to the full replacement of live vocalist. As in its time the attempts to get natural grand piano or a string section sound led to the appearance of Electro-Piano and Strings, still unable to replace Steinway or London Symphony Orchestra string section and yet not deprived of their own advantages.

Flying Girl

Verse 1
She is strange and pretty Russian girl
Maybe you in your dreams met her many times
But you'll never be so closer
To the image from blue sky, I'm sure

Verse 2
She was always flying in the sky
Like a bird who never knew the earth where people live
When they tell this fly is
An illusion she says: You are wrong

Refrain
Olga, Oh, Olga
Olga, Oh, Olga
...

Verse 3
She is strange and pretty Russian girl
Maybe you in your dreams met her many times
And you can believe me that her fly
Is very real, now you know!
